A Shoot To Remember
I am a photographer and see all walks
of life. I photograph people and events
— weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, etc.
Most of my business for the past six
months has been photographing non-
profit fundraising events, with the
greatest amount of time spent photo-
graphing political fundraising dinners.
For the past six months, I spent 2-3
days a week documenting $1,500-
$2,500-a-plate dinners raising money
for the two major political parties. In
the past six months, I have had dinner
with Arizona Sen. John McCain three
times, former New York City Mayor
Rudy Giuliani, Michigan Gov. Jennifer
Granholm, Sen. John Kerry, New York
Gov. George Pataki, White House
adviser Karl Rove, Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice and the secretaries
of labor, interior, education, etc.
Last week, I was asked by the
Jewish News to document the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit/
Jewish Community Council's Mitzvah
Day, specifically one family and their
first time participating. I followed
them to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in
Detroit where they served Christmas
dinner.
The family I was asked to docu-
ment is Jewish. They moved here from
Puerto Rico six months ago. I asked
why they came to Metro Detroit. Their

answer: "For a better Jewish life."
Imagine that! Young people are mov-
ing from here in droves, yet this family
came because we have the type of
Jewish life they are looking for!
Back to the Capuchin Kitchen: Over
the day, volunteers served more than
400 dinners to people for one reason
or another: homeless, unemployed,
under-employed. Every one had a
smile and a huge thank you for the
volunteers, who left warm homes to
serve the only hot meal the recipients
would have all day.
I learned more about politics and
life in the two hours I spent at the
kitchen than in six months with the
movers and shakers of the U.S. politi-
cal system.
The guests always thanked the
volunteers serving them, from the 1 1h-
year-old child who hugged his teenage
server to the 70-something wearing
everything he owned. The guests'
needs are not Middle East peace,
single business tax reform or global
warming, only a warm place.
I take pictures of people to make
them look good. This day, their smiles
made me realize that a $2,500-a-plate
dinner is far less rewarding than
$2,500 for 400 dinners.
