I was in Chicago, I tried several times
and failed to get involved there.
"I put the dream aside for a while
until I came back to Detroit. I was
raised on National Public Radio so
when I came back to Michigan, I
started looking around for how I could
get involved with radio, particularly
WDET."
Ovshinsky, who is single, decided
to live in Ann Arbor because he likes
the cultural setting he finds there.
While he enjoys reading about both
trends and history, he also likes sports
and plays softball with a team spon-
sored by the Jewish Federation of
Washtenaw County.
"I feel that I've achieved a primary
goal of getting my toe in the door of
public radio': Ovshinsky says. "I feel
like this is where I belong, and my
goal is to get better at what I do.
"Public radio is one of the only
places people can go for well-balanced
stories with context. At a time when
we're fed our information with shorter
and shorter time spans, public radio is
a refreshing contrast:"

a program that took him to Kenya,
where he taught basic math, English

When Ovshinsky was younger, he
spent summers as camper and coun-

American Jewish Society for Service,
which is based in New York and sets

While still in high school, Ovshinsky
did summer volunteer work in Israel.
During his employment with HKO
Media, Ovshinsky produced many
kinds of video projects, including docu-
mentaries honoring freedom fighter
Raoul Wallenberg and University of
Michigan athletic director Bill Martin.
Other of his video subjects explored
depression, violence and generic drugs.
"I always knew I wanted to work in
public radio:' Ovshinsky says. "When

Good-bye to pitcher Larry Sherry,
who died on Dec.17, at age 71.
Sherry, then a Dodger, was great in
relief during the 1959 World Series.
He won two games and earned two
saves in his four appearances and
was named Series MVP. Sherry
pitched for the Detroit Tigers in
1964-1967.
Outfielder Gabe Kapler, 31, most
recently of the Red Sox and a
Tiger in 1998-1999, has decided
to retire and take a minor league
coaching job. Kapler says he could
play for a few more years and
earn a fat Major League salary,
but he'd rather help young people
and start on a coaching career
with an eye toward managing in
the big leagues someday.

Jonathan

who plays for
the ChivasUSA
team in Los Angeles, was the 2006
Major League Soccer rookie of the
year. A native Angeleno, Jonathan
is the son of a Jewish father and a
Mexican-born non-Jewish mother.
He grew up celebrating the Jewish
holidays and led the United States
to a silver medal in the 2005
Maccabiah Games in Israel.
He says about his Maccabiah
experience: "It was amazing. It was
great. I loved it. It made me realize
how fulfilling and enriched Jewish
culture realty is. So in the past
couple years, I've felt more Jewish
than ever."
