Stepping out for Chanukah
amid latkes and vodka.

Robin Schwartz

S fizzling latkes served in a swanky downtown saloon made for a festive young adult Chanukah
celebration with a hip and trendy spin. More than 200 people packed the Centaur Bar in Detroit
to enjoy food, drinks and music at the annual Latke & Vodka Party sponsored by the Young Adult
Division of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
Partygoers arrived to find dreidels and Chanukah confetti scattered around on tables where sweet pota-
to, vegetable and traditional potato latkes were served. Mini sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) helped sweeten
the deal:
"People love to get together to celebrate Chanukah and share good times. That's why this has become
such a popular annual event," said YAD President Jennifer Friedman of Huntington Woods.
Stolichnaya Vodka sponsored the party and organizers created a special drink menu with names like
Dizzy Dreidel and White Russian Jew. This was the second year the event was held at Centaur — a two-
story, art deco cocktail lounge near Detroit's Fox Theatre. Since it opened in August 2005, the bar has
earned rave reviews, including being named one of the best "25 New Places to Step Out" in the world by
Conde Nast Traveler magazine.
"People were chatting up a storm; the party was a huge success," said Friedman. "Who knows what chic
venue we'll choose for Latke & Vodka next year."
Spotted in the crowd at the Dec. 16 celebration were: Social committee co-chairs Rachel Wright
of Birmingham and Randall Fogelman of Detroit; event co-chairs Kate Bush of West Bloomfield
and Lauren Gibbs of Royal Oak; Elizabeth David and Jay Lazar, both of Farmington Hills; Craig
Eidelman, Lori Schram, and Jeff and Andrea Belen, all of Berkley; Aaron Schwartz and Jennifer
Greenberg, both of Oak Park; Sara Zonder, Aaron Scheinfeld, Stephanie Schiff, Faya Gene, and
Jill and Craig Menuck, all of Birmingham; Jodi Millman of Troy; and Michael Silverstein and
Allison Goldstein of Royal Oak.
