ersonal trainer Gary Gonte
possesses the latest weapon
in the arsenal of fitness
equipment — Russian kettlebells.
Never heard of them? Don't be
surprised. Kettlebells are hot in

Sylvester Stallone, Penelope Cruz and
Lance Armstrong use them as an effi-
cient route to tone up and slim down.
Stallone can be seen using them brief-

the movie is being shown. If you haven't
seen the movie, it's unlikely you even
know what a kettlebell looks like.
Called a girya in Russian, the kettle-
bell is a cast-iron cannonball with a
handle. It first appeared in the Russian
dictionary in 1704, and became
very popular during czarist Russia.
Kettlebells also were used to train sol-

spend only 15 minutes a day four or

"The scariest thing is to use this and
not know what you're doing," he said.
"You have to be instructed or you'll get
hurt. It's not as easy as it looks."
He stresses that form is essential for
the five basic movements and beyond.
Elbows need to be in and shoulders
down to avoid injury, Gonte says, add-
ing "most people don't lift that way at
all." He advises those with bad knees
to stay away from kettlebells.
