Learning Years
That Barr would be part of such a
breakthrough doesn't surprise his
now-retired science teachers from
Birmingham Groves High School in
Beverly Hills.
"As a student, he was always superb,"
said Alan Rockwell, who had the 1981
Groves graduate for advanced place-
ment chemistry. "He was always a star.
The whole school knew him?'

clinical trials to determine whether it
would work."
The clinical trials took place at sites
throughout the world, including the
Detroit Medical Center-based Hutzel
Women's Hospital, where Barr will
speak in March.
"We were a study site for the vac-
cine," said Dr. S. Gene McNeeley, direc-
tor of the division of gynecology at
Hutzel and Wayne State University in
Detroit. "I know he's a great speaker.
We were excited that he would come.
"It [the vaccine] is going to impact
the number of cervical cancer cases
in the United States;' McNeeley said,
where the Pap smear is and should
continue to be used as a detection
method for HPVs not targeted by the
current vaccine. "But it's really world-
wide where it will be felt"
Last month, the United States
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) added it to their
Vaccines for Children contract for girls
and women ages 9 to 18.
Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the
immunization program at the CDC
called it "a breakthrough for women's
health."
who taught anatomy and
physiology "He was gifted
enough to help teach my class.
He's been ahead of himself all
his life?'
Indeed, Barr had just turned
17 when he left for an accel-
erated medical program at
Pennsylvania State University
and Jefferson Medical College
in Philadelphia. In fact,
Slaughter recalled, he had to fly
back from college for his high
school graduation.
He did an internship,
residency and fellowship in
cardiology at Johns Hopkins
in Baltimore, followed by two
years as a postdoctoral student
in cardiovascular research at
the University of Michigan. He
went on to the University of
Chicago to teach and do research.
Then, Barr said, "I found Merck!'
He spent three years learning to do
clinical trials and experiments in car-
diovascular medicine before assuming
leadership of the HPV trials.
Family Pride
Barr, born in Israel, originally thought
he might team up with his dad, a car-
diologist, and his mom, a registered
nurse, who helped manage the prac-
tice.
To be with his dad, "I spent time at
his office and at the hospital. I knew I
was going to be a doctor early on?'
But "I really liked research from the
beginning," Barr said. "As it turned out,
it was a terrific path for me?'
"I'm very proud of him," Miriam
Barr said. "It didn't happen overnight.
He was more in the air [flying to
clinical testing sites all over the world]
than on the ground.
At the same time, she says, "He's a
really good son. He's always here when
we need him. I wish every mother
should have a boy like this?'
"The contribution of creating the
vaccine is profoundly important,"
Isaac Barr said. "I'm proud that he
developed the vaccine to help so many
people?'
More work lies ahead.
Eliav Barr continues to lead trials
in 33 countries to determine whether
the vaccine is effective for women ages
27 to the onset of menopause, and for
boys and men.
"There's a lot more to do',' Barr said.
"We have to get the rest of the world
to implement it. It's only effective if it's
given? __
