Do A Mitzvah
Mitzvah Day, an annual day of vol-
unteering by Detroit's Jewish com-
munity, will take place on Monday,
Dec. 25. Volunteers of all ages will
participate in social service projects
throughout Metro Detroit so that
Christian neighbors can celebrate
Christmas.
As many as 900 Jewish volunteers
are expected to participate. They will
begin with a breakfast and a orien-
tation at 8 a.m. at the Max M. Fisher
Federation Building, 6735 Telegraph
Road, Bloomfield Township, and
then fan out to more than 40 sites.
Project times vary, but run from
7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities include
visits to nursing facilities, preparing
and serving holiday meals, deliver-
ing toys and gifts to families in need
and helping a humane society.
Mitzvah Day is sponsored by the
Jewish Community Council and the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit, with corporate partner the
Ford Motor Company Fund. Event
chairs are Micki Grossman and
Carol Freedman. For information

Rofel A B'nai B'rith VP

John Rofel of West Bloomfield was
elected senior vice president of B'nai
B'rith International.
Rofel and his wife, Marsha, have
been active in B'nai B'rith for nearly
20 years. They were the first recipi-
ents of BBI's young leadership cou-
ples award, the Label
A. Katz Award.
Rofel has been
involved in nearly
every aspect of the
management of the
B'nai B'rith Great
Lakes region, and
served as its presi-

dent from 2001-2004.
On an international level,
Rofel is past chairman of the BBI
International Leadership Cabinet; a
member of BBI's board of governors,
executive committee and budget
committee; and co-chair of the
select committee that reorganized
B'nai B'rith in the United States into
program service centers.
Rofel is a partner in the CPA firm
of Cannvasser, Rofel & Associates in
West Bloomfield. He is a member
of the Michigan Association and
American Association of Certified
Public Accountants.
He will join Moishe Smith of
Ottawa on BBI's volunteer leadership
team.
