The evening began with Rabbi Arnie Sleutelberg and Rabbi Aaron Starr of the Troy synagogue leading the families in a moving Havdalah ceremony. Then they were joined by Gail Greenberg, family education music specialist, in singing Chanukah songs and lighting the chanukiot (Chanukah menorot). Greenberg shared her family's 250-year-old chanukiah, originally from Galicia, Poland. Originating with Greenberg's great-great grandfather, Rabbi Jacob Bachrach, the silver oil chanukiah has been passed down for generations. The Shir Tikvah families spent the rest of the evening laughing and playing on giant interactive inflatable play structures.
