he 1980s — the decade that brought us Pac-Man, the Rubik's
Cube, the "Cosby Show" and singer Cyndi Lauper — brought
about 50 young Jewish couples to Como's in Ferndale for an
"Incredibly '80s" party to remember their youth.
Many were inspired to revive old hairstyles and slip on old cloth-
ing for the event; the clothes ranged from legwarmers and leggings to
denim jackets covered with pins. The party, sponsored by the couples
committee of the Young Adult Division of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, also featured '80s music, candy and games from
two decades ago.
.
"It really brought back memories of my childhood and early ado-
lescence," said Shirley Cetner of West Bloomfield, a member of the
YAD couples committee. "I remember exactly how I wore my hair
back then — bangs teased high, big hair, with a little ponytail on the
top of my head."
Cetner helped set the '80s mood, supplying a number of old toys
she found in her parents' basement, including a giant stuffed Smurf, a
Monchichi doll and the marble game "Hungry, Hungry, Hippos." There
were also retro candies like Wax Lips, Nerds and Pixie Stix on the
tables. Partygoers danced to '80s tunes like Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna
Have Fun" and "Hey Mickey" by Toni Basil.
"I'm fond of the '80s because I was in college and the Pistons won a
basketball championship," said Ron Radner of West Bloomfield. "It
was just a different time; I can still remember it, but my life is so dif-
ferent now"
Radner and his wife, Rachel, won a prize for being the best-dressed
couple. They dressed as Don Johnson and Debbie Gibson. Another
partygoer, Jennifer Freedland of West Bloomfield, wore her bat
mitzvah dress even though she's several months pregnant.
Also enjoying the Dec. 2 party were Marla Kaminsky, Dani
and Greg Glickfield, and Emilia and Jeffrey Miller, all of West
Bloomfield; Michele and Scott Rosenblum, and Rachel and
Scott Liebovitz of Birmingham; Jessica and Danny Klein of
Novi; and Rebecca and David Salama of Huntington Woods. _
