Letters Federation's & Hyman & Sonia Blumenstein Outreach Institute of the Sara & Morris Tugman 'torah Center Bais Chabad of West Bloomfield ifAVONG D1STFYUTK Alliance for isit Educatioli Invite you to an eight-part course Letters from page 6 he Kabbalah of Charac Boo Toward Borat I read Rabbi Jonathan Berkun's Community View "Borat: No Laughing Matter" (Dec. 7, page 34). I sat in the movie theater, watching the movie and did not find much to laugh about. I found the humor vulgar, raw and unsubstantiated; but what outraged me the most was the use of the Hebrew language every time Borat pretended to speak the Kazakh language. As if no one can tell the difference between the two languages. As if it really does not matter whom you insult in the pro- cess as long as the majority of the audience doesn't know the differ- ence, and it sounds foreign. What an insult to the audience's intelligence, to the Hebrew-speak- ing people and to the Kazakhstanis, whose language the makers of this film were too lazy to acquire for use in the movie. This is bigotry and disrespect on the part of the Hebrew-speaking Jewish observant actor. Regarding the Leonard N. Simons Jewish Community Archives at Wayne State University's Reuther Library in Detroit and at the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit in Bloomfield Township (Editor's Letter,"More Than Preservation:' Dec 7, page 5): Leonard N. Simons loved the Detroit Jewish community and loved Temple Beth El, where he was president of the congregation from 1953 to 1955. Books and publishing were among his many interests, and in 1973, he gave a gift to the temple of approximately 1,000 volumes of Anglo-Judaica printed in the 16th through 19th centuries and beautifully bound. This collection is proudly housed in the Prentis Memorial Library of Temple Beth El, where it is currently being reor- ganized. When the project is finished, the items will enrich Jewish learning by being available, by appointment, for research.
