Standing, Anne Robin Schwartz Special to the Jewish News F ive distinctive flavors from the vineyards of Israel were uncorked during a kosher wine-tast- ing event at the Janice Charach Epstein Gallery at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. More than 50 mem- bers of the David L. Bittker Unit of B'nai B'rith's Great Lakes Region raised their glasses and toasted as they approached the first anniver- sary of becoming a young adult chapter. The event also helped raise sev- eral hundred dollars for a disaster relief fund, which will benefit victims of Hezbollah rockets in Israel and Louisiana residents still recovering from Hurricane Katrina. "The event was a tremendous success': said Steve Rotenberg of Farmington Hills, president of the Bittker Unit. "After forming our group and seeing what we've been able to do in the community and how we've helped other peo- ple, there's no better feeling." Since receiving their B'nai B'rith charter last January, the Bittker Unit has held a number of social and community service events for Jewish couples in their 30s and 40s. They've donated Chanukah gifts to those in need through Jewish Family Service, played bingo with Jewish seniors, stuffed pillows for heart patients and enjoyed a roller skating party and a family day at Kensington Metropark near Milford. "We started with 42 couples and now we're up to about 50 cou- ples': Rotenberg said. "B'nai B'rith as a whole is an older organiza- tion; it's 163 years old. We're trying to bring the age group down so there are more people in their 30s and 40s involved. Our goal for the coming year is to keep growing and raise even more money for B'nai B'rith:' Attendees at the Nov. 18 event included: Lisa and Brad Adelson, Mark and Erica Lusky, Audrey and Brian Seifman, and Jodi and Keith Tobin, all of West Bloomfield; Marci Rotenberg, Nita and Ron Steam, and Rita and Sid Roth, all of Farmington Hills; and Anne and Stuart Novick of Birmingham. The event was co-sponsored by Whole Foods Market and Caribou Coffee, both of West Bloomfield. and Stuart Novick of Birmingham; seated, Nita and Ron Stearn of Farmington Hills; and Todd Stearn of Beverly Hills Erika and Mark Lusky of West Bloomfield e yo skiing on men's skis?
