By composition, hair is made up
of about 97% keratin, a fibrous
structural protein. Keratin can also
be found in the epidermis (outer)
layer of skin and is believed to give
skin its strength, flexibility and
waterproof qualities.

It is true that the peer-re-
viewed scientific literature
regarding the interplay
between nutrition and hair
loss is pretty slim. There
is support for the belief
that iron supplements
V- and the essential amino
acid, l-lysine, can prove
/ beneficial regarding
certain groups of women
with hair loss.

To Life!

For late-breaking news:

trition can affect the qual-
ity and growth/loss of hair. Like
your skin, your hair reacts to what
you eat and your overall health.

Hair, however, can be an indicator
of the body's overall health: e.g.,
breakage can be a sign of vitamin/
mineral deficiency and extreme
dryness may indicate improper
nutrition. Also, hair testing and
analysis may show certain nutri-
ent/element deficiencies.

If you suffer from unexplained
hair loss, you should see a doctor.
A qualified dietitian can help with
your particular nutritional needs.
