Jamming For Darfur
Jewish students were plentiful at the
Band Jam held Saturday night at the West
Bloomfield JCC to raise awareness of and
raise relief money to fight the genocidal
warfare in Darfur. The Sudanese govern-
ment, using its air force, Arab Janjaweed
militias, and organized starvation is sys-
tematically killing the black Sudanese of
Darfur (www.darfurgenocide.org ).
In October, West Bloomfield High
students Hannah Hakala and Haley Stern
were in Sociology of Genocide class dis-
cussing the horrific situation. As mem-
bers of Teens Making Changes (TMC),
the youth component of the Greater West
Bloomfield Community Coalition, they
have been involved in organizing many
activities for their peers.
The Band Jam at the Inline Hockey
Center at the JCC is another example.
ROAR, Rock Out Against Racism, aided
Darfur refugees and West Bloomfield's
United We Walk programs on Martin
Luther King Jr. Day in January.
Bands represented West Bloomfield
High, Bloomfield Hills Andover, Walled
Lake Central and the Frankel Jewish
Academy. Bands included Deadbeat,
Edge of Decency, Press Play Now,
Original Victim and The Comeback.
ROAR t-shirts sold for $10. They
also will be available at the United We
Walk celebrations on Jan.14-15.
TMC has high school representatives
from Bloomfield Hills Andover, West
Bloomfield High, Walled Lake Central,
Walled Lake Northern, Frankel Jewish
Academy, St. Mary's Preparatory,
Birmingham Brother Rice and
Birmingham Marian.
