As a youngster, Crewel/, who will
mark his 30th birthday while in
Detroit, alternated between appear-
ing in shows and playing football.
"I would rehearse one day, practice
football the next day and so on," he
remembers. "I finally chose the arts
and joined theater groups in West
Virginia to hone my skills."
He also studied theater at Syracuse
University, has appeared in regional
theater, taught budding students and
choreographed shows, before audi-
tioning for Spamalot. "The highlight
so far was when I stepped into the
Lancelot role during the Toronto run,"
he said. "I had plenty of advance
notice, and most of my family came
to see me."
Karen, who hails from Kendall,
Fla., a Miami suburb, started danc-
ing at the age of 4, followed by sing-
ing, acting and gymnastics lessons,
and celebrated her bat mitzvah at a
Conservative synagogue. She attended
Hofstra University on Long Island to
earn her degree in dance and psychol-
ogy. The actress has performed in the
casts of Man of La Mancha and Chess
on Broadway and regionally played
the role of Anita in West Side Story
and the lead in Annie before audition-
ing for Spamalot.
Karen is married to actor Mark
Deklin, who plays the recurring role
of Dr. Matthew Shaw on FOX TV's
Justice, and they have recently moved
from New York to Los Angeles.
"My Spamalot role has turned it
into a long-distance marriage she
laments. "But we- visit each other
every two to three weeks, and it's
working out well. Detroit will be my
fourth city on this tour.
"We're really excited because Mark
recently landed a part on Desperate
Housewives as one of Eva Longoria's
boyfriends (he can be seen as Bill
Pearce, the widower father of a young
beauty pageant hopeful being coached
by her character Gabrielle)."
Interviewed in their -hotel while
the tour was in Cincinnati, Crewell
and Karen seemed to be having a
blast performing in Spamalot. "The
audiences are eating it up," said
Karen, "and we're having a lot of
fun."
