Bloomfield uperman, Batman and Wonder Woman were never so chic! The Golden Age comic superheroes were the guests of honor during an evening of wine, food and mingling at the Janice Charach Epstein Gallery at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. The event, sponsored by the Imagine arts and culture group of Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, brought about 75 young adults to the exhibit "Zap! Pow! Barn! The Superhero: 1938-1950 — The Golden Age of Comic Books:' which runs through Dec. 14. "Everybody loves superheroes," said Francine Krasner of West Bloomfield. She chaired the event along with her fiance, Dr. Phil Arbit of Farmington Hills. "It was very interesting to see the pictures and learn about the history and the Jewish content behind these larger-than-life characters:' Krasner said. The group also was treated to a special presentation by Arie Kaplan, a writer for MAD magazine, MTV's Total Request Live and JibJab Media. Kaplan spoke about Jewish com- edy, using clips from the Honeymooners and Seinfeld to punctuate the timeless quality of some of the humor. Afterwards, participants enjoyed dessert and wine as they strolled through the colorful, lively exhibit, learning about how figures like Superman, Batman and Captain America were born out of biblical heroes. "The exhibit really brings you back — as a child, I always liked Wonder Woman:' said Krasner. "It was a great feeling to know where Superman came from — and it was also nice to learn this connection and be able to go home and share it with your children:' Among those sipping wine with superheroes at the Nov. 4 event were: Amy Bershad, Julie and Tony Emmer, Alaina and Sandy Kronenberg, Cathy and Daniel Klein and Stacey and Brad Simon, all of West Bloomfield; Craig Eidelman of Berkley; Amy and Jason Epstein of Commerce Township; Lisa and Jason Klein of Bloomfield Hills; Stacey and Larry Milen and Kari and Jeff Provizer, all of Farmington Hills; and Jennifer Lipson of Northville. li Immanuel Miller and Daniel Cohen, both 18, of Israel Co-Chairs Dr. Phil Arbit of Farmington Hills and Francine Krasner of West Bloomfield k","` December 7 2006 49
