Police Stay On Alert
West Bloomfield — Police are actively
working on the case of computer items
stolen from six Jewish institutions from
Oct. 30 to Nov. 18. West Bloomfield and
Farmington Hills police are continu-
ing to patrol the areas near the four
synagogues — Adat Shalom Synagogue
and Bais Chabad in Farmington Hills
and Keter Torah Synagogue, Ohel Moed
Shomrey Emunah and the Shul-Chabad
Lubavitch, all in West Bloomfield — as
well as the Friendship House in West
Bloomfield, where the thefts took place.
The arrest of a man who reportedly
stole a patron's laptop from a table
at the West Bloomfield Library the
evening of Nov. 30 was determined to
be unrelated to the previous crimes.
Neither. Farmington Hills nor West
Bloomfield police have received calls
from anyone suspecting they were
contacted because their names were
stored on the stolen computers.
"There's a good chance there will be
more thefts:' Lt. Fuhs said. "We aren't
letting our guard down?'
Betsy Kellman, regional director
of the Anti-Defamation League in
Bloomfield Township is continuing
work related to the thefts. She has
organized a security seminar to be
held next week for leadership and
information technology professionals
of all area Jewish institutions. Security
specialists from the San Diego- and
New York-based ADL offices, local
police working and an area computer
specialist who is a former FBI agent
and prosecutor will cover techniques
for securing institutions, computer
and information security and the
importance of maintaining an ongo-
ing relationship with law enforcement
officials.

Bolton Stepping Down
New York/JTA — John Bolton, a
staunch defender of Israel at the
United Nations, resigned as U.S.
ambassador.
The White House said Monday that
Bolton would step down once his
recess appointment ends.
President Bush had given Bolton
the position in August 2005, but
his nomination was blocked in the
Senate Foreign Relations Committee'.
The appointment will expire by early
January, though Bolton may step
down earlier. Most major U.S. Jewish
groups broke with tradition to endorse
Bolton, who in addition to his support
of Israel is a strong opponent of Iran's
nuclear drive.

Hamas: Violence' OK
Gaza City/JTA — Hamas can
run a violent intifada even while in
power, and will not act against armed
Palestinian groups, its leaders said.
The terrorist group's supreme leader,
Khaled Meshaal, told Lebanese media
Tuesday that Hamas can continue to
direct violence against Israel, and that
the current cease-fire in the Gaza Strip
is merely a tactic. He added that even
if a two-state solution to the conflict
is implemented, Palestinian violence
will continue as long as Israel sits on
occupied" land.
Speaking separately Tuesday at a
refugee camp in Syria, Palestinian
Authority Prime Minister Ismail
Haniyeh said the Hamas-led govern-
ment encourages violence against
Israel, and would never act against ter-
rorist groups that attack Israel.

Hezbollah War Crimes
Washington/JTA — A new report
using declassified Israeli military
materials documents Hezbollah's use
of civilians as human shields and
other war crimes during this sum-
mer's conflict.
The American Jewish Congress
helped the Intelligence and Terrorism
Information Center at the Institute
for Special Studies, a private research
group with close ties to Israeli intel-
ligence, prepare and translate the
report.
Seen as a semiofficial Israeli
response to charges that Israel com-
mitted war crimes by attacking civil-
ian areas of Lebanon, the report shows
how Hezbollah fighters deliberately
operated from within populated areas
and exploited civilian cover during the
34-day war with Israel, in violation of
international law.
Most of the report, which Israel
hopes will help deter war-crimes suits
threatened by Lebanese and foreign
activist groups, appears on
www.ajcongress.org .

Dirtch Bank Divests
Jerusalem/JTA — A Dutch bank is
divesting from a French firm involved
in constructing Jerusalem's light-rail
system. The Jerusalem Post reported
that ASN is divesting from Veolia,
whose subsidiary Connex Israel holds
about 5 percent of the CityPass con-
sortium that is building the line.
ASN said the system is being built
partly on "occupied" land in eastern
Jerusalem.
