A

century of American
Jewish history springs to
life at ajcarchives.org , the
American Jewish Committee's new
archival Web site. The organization
launched the site as part of its cen-
tennial anniversary celebration.
When you visit the site, you're
just a click away from reading AJC
correspondence with Henry Ford.
Listening to a broadcast of the first
Jewish religious service conducted by
American GI's on liberated German
soil. Viewing letters between AJC
and David Ben-Gurion, among other
seminal figures.
The site opens doors to historic
artifacts related to AJC contacts with
Catholic leaders as the Church moved
toward Vatican II. And to films of
Natan Sharansky, Elie Wiesel and oth-
ers 'addressing the historic Freedom
Sunday Rally for Soviet Jewry in
Washington in 1987. "Unlike the vast
majority of archival Web sites — and
making this one of great interest to
the general public — ajcarchives.
org provides instant access to much
of the archival material itself. It takes
a vital step beyond the traditional
listing of archival contents;' said
Charlotte Bonelli, director of AJC's
Digital Archives and Information
Center.
Through interactive timelines and
basic and advanced search engines,
the Web site opens to the Web user an
expanding treasure of materials.
The site contains 75,000 pages of
documents; a rare collection of films,
radio and television broadcasts;
more than 100 years of the American
Jewish Year Book, the annual record
of events and trends in the Jewish
world; and selections from the AJC-
sponsored William E. Weiner Oral
History Collection, one of the largest
oral history collections in the United
States.
The oral history excerpts let you
listen in on intimate conversations
with, among others., Bella Abzug,
George Burns, Abba Eban, Hank
Greenberg, Golda Meir, Arthur Miller,
Molly Picon and Neil Simon. Film

and radio selections available at the
site include AJC-produced dramas
about the effects of prejudice and
hate. Among the actors you'll see or
hear are Robert Duvall, James Cagney
and Helen Hayes.
Web users click their way to the
site in search of primary sources that
help clarify and uncover the history
of American Jewish life and activism,
turn-of-the-century pogroms, World
War II pro-democracy radio cam-
paigns, the struggle for civil rights,
Israel advocacy, Catholic-Jewish rela-
tions, the movement to free Soviet
Jewry, the struggle against terrorism
and Islamic extremism.
A host of documents and artifacts
on all these topics and more are fully
searchable at www.ajcarchives.org .
The acclaimed historian of American
Jewish life, Deborah Dash Moore,
director of the Jewish Studies pro-
gram at the University of Michigan
and author of GI Jews: How WWII
Changed A Generation, said the AJC
has done a community service in
constructing the Web site and mak-
ing widely available its collection of
archival materials.
"For one thing, I think it's simply
wonderful to have the American
Jewish Year Book online, since it's
an invaluable historical source and
record of events:' said Professor
Moore.
In addition, she continued, "the
interactive timelines, the oral history
memoir excerpts, the cartoons, com-
ics, and film clips all convey the com-
plex process of a century of creative
Jewish efforts to fight prejudice and
anti-Semitism and promote a plural-
ist society and a peaceful world."
