Chanukah Downtown
The Downtown Synagogue
Chanukah party will be Saturday,
Dec. 16. The annual congregational
meeting begins at 6:30 p.m.; the
party will follow at 7.
The charge is $5 per person.
There will be an Oneg Shabbat
on Friday, Dec. 15, at 5:30 p.m.
Dinner will follow. Adults $10;
couples $15; children under 13, $5.

B'ham Menorah Lighting
A public menorah lighting will take
place in downtown Birmingham's
Shain Park at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec.
19, the fifth night of Chanukah.
Sponsored by the Birmingham-
Bloomfield Chai Center, a syna-
gogue, the free event is open to the
public and will feature live music
and donuts.
The center has put up a 6-foot
electric menorah since 2002, but
this is the first year using real
candles.

Let There Be Light
Temple Israel will join the Coalition
on the Environment and Jewish
Life (COEJL) to install compact
fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs dur-
ing Chanukah.
On Friday, Dec. 8, during the
temple's 7:30 p.m. Shabbat services,
Rabbi Paul Yedwab will present
information about COEJL's CFL
bulb campaign, designed to con-
serve energy, reduce greenhouse
gas emissions and promote energy
legislation.
CFLs use up to 75 percent less
energy than regular bulbs, while
lasting seven to 10 times longer.
The average CFL will save at least
$25 in energy costs over the life-
time of the bulb. To learn more,
