Support Yeshiva
As a past president of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, I
read your report of the Yeshiva Beth
Yehudah dinner with great interest CA
Call For Support," Nov. 23, page 13). I
am an alumnus of the Yeshiva and have
always supported its vital mission.
As the article highlighted, it is quite
clear that the Yeshiva cannot raise suf-
ficient funds — either from tuition or
from ongoing fundraising — to edu-
cate the next generation of leaders.
We must take a page out of the
playbooks of the great universities of
America: Our community must step
forward with a bold plan to build a sig-
nificant endowment for the Yeshiva. It
is therefore incumbent upon each and
every one of us to make an additional
gift toward this endowment according
to our own means and abilities, guaran-
teeing the Yeshiva's future as a beacon
of Judaism in our community.

A Leap Of Faith
In his Editor's Letter, "A Conservative
Approach" (Nov. 23, page 5), Editor
Robert Sklar is excited about the
changes that can be made within the
Conservative movement as initiated
by the young adults who become our
young leaders.
It is no coincidence that Conservative
shuls feel the "pinching" effect caused
by the Reform and Orthodox move-
ments. Therefore, while simultane-
ously building a core group of young,
devoted leaders, maybe it is time to
"think outside the box" by redefining
Conservative Judaism and creating a
new Conservative environment.
Conservative shuls that can offer
both "Conformed" and "Conservadox"
services, kashrut rules, programs, tradi-
tions, etc., will empower their members
to choose how they want to practice
Conservative Judaism and when they
want to (possibly every-other-week).
This flexibility and choice within
Conservative shuls of any size will enable
Conservative Jews (both young and old)
to fulfill their religious objectives (which
may change from time to time) within
the demands of secular and Jewish life in
today's demanding world.
In fact, all Conservative shuls should
entertain the possibility of doing some-
thing like this on a community wide
basis rather than going about it inde-
pendently. We are all competing for the
same prize!
"Spiritual uplifting in a 21st century
way" is the leap of faith needed today
and can be part of the mission state-
ment for the Conservative movement.
Yes, it is up to young Conservative lead-
ers to initiate this or any type of change
and spread the word.
Now, this is something to get excited
about!

Wary Of Conyers
The Editor's Letter by Robert Sklar
on U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Detroit,
was quite disturbing ("Conyers' Bold
Declaration," Nov. 9, page 5).
Jewish Detroiters who care about
America and Israel's security should
do everything in their power to mini-
mize this man's influence. Rep. Conyers
is very smart and will say whatever
the Jewish community wants to hear.
However, the important fact is that he is
beholden only to his Arab constituency.
In line with those who he represents,
Conyers would like us to believe that
the war in Iraq and the greater war on
terror have nothing to do with Islam.
Indeed, Conyers has done all in his
power to tie President Bush's hands
behind his back so that he cannot pros-
ecute the war, including Conyers' efforts
to do away with the Patriot Act and
initiating proceedings to impeach the
president during wartime!
What is most important are actions,
not words. Rep. Conyers' actions are
dangerous for America and Israel.

Which American historical figure initiated the most anti-Semitic
