OUR FRIEND Judy Weiner has always had a passion for collecting. Long before she opened House on Main, a

Royal Oak boutique brimming with new and vintage china and furniture, plus baby gifts and more, her obsession

began with a set of six china plates in flow blue — a pottery technique whose blue transfer has been softly blurred.

Her grandmother gave them to Weiner when she was a child, explaining

how they had once belonged to her mother. She was hooked.

MISSION STATEMENT

Platinum is a monthly, glossy
lifestyle magazine published
by the Detroit Jewish News.
It reflects all aspects of life in
the Metro Detroit Jewish com-
munity, including decor, fashion,
food, health, spirituality, books,
shopping and more. Whether
profiling a unique member of
our community or the latest hot
spot or trend you should know
about, Platinum's got it covered.
Our goal is to be a part of the
fabric of the Jewish community
and to reflect those who have
created it — our readers.

In college, she bought her first photograph — an Alfred Stieglitz, no

less. She later bought an Annie Liebovitz for $350. "It was easier back

then because everything was inexpensive," says Weiner. "This was the

1960s, so starting early helped. Now I have a lot of things that I can't

even put on the walls, so I give them to my kids."

Eventually she added to those first six plates and has amassed a col-

lection of more than 75 pieces of the beautifully hued china — examples

of which she used to set our luminous Chanukah table for this issue. "I

like to mix the new with the old," she says, "and I like the unexpected."
