Hills. "She's the reason I decided to
serve people who were having trans-
plants!'
Betty Wegener could relate to the
stories two survivors and a caregiver
told at the breakfast.
"I know what it was to go through
something like this:' said Wegener, a
Farmington Hills resident and a kid-
ney transplant recipient. "They were
impressive and spoke from the heart!'
Ruth Kadish, whose husband Paul
survived non-Hodgkin's lymphoma by
having a stem cell transplant, hosted a
table at the breakfast. "Paul is a (peer)
support person. He's been involved:'
said Kadish, also a Farmington Hills
resident.
"The immediate goal [of the break-
fast] wasn't to raise money:' Jacobs
said. "We do hope that individuals will
feel inspired to give, help us to open
doors and perhaps become involved
with the organization as volunteers!'
Although individuals and corpora-
tions support nbmtLINK, major fund-
ing comes from medical organizations
including the American Society for
Blood and Marrow Transplantation;
Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute in Detroit; Dana Farber
Cancer Institute; Fred Hutchinson
Cancer Research Institute; Henry
Ford Transplant Institute in Detroit;
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer
Center; National Marrow Donor
Program; St. Joseph's Healthcare

and the University of Michigan
Comprehensive Cancer Center.
"Transplantation is a unique thera-
py, a far more aggressive therapy that
requires more support for patients
and their families than for other kinds
of cancer treatment:' said Dr. Joseph
Uberti, professor of medicine and
co-director of the Blood and Marrow
Stem Cell Transplant Program at
Karmanos.
"Myra's a tireless worker and a great
spokesperson:' said Uberti, who serves
on nbmt/LINK's board of directors.
"She's created a grass-roots organiza-
tion with little financial support that's
been able to extend out to the whole
country.
"It's been very valuable for our
patients and their families." _7:1
