A

nswer: Dear Helen, Un-
fortunately, some loss of
taste may occur naturally
as part of the aging process (often
noticeable after the age of 60),
although the degree of loss appears
to.vary widely among individuals.

The most common causes of age-
related loss of taste are the degen-
eration of nerves associated with
our sense of smell (an important
contributor to taste) and the dimin-
ishment of taste bud sensitivity.

Other causes of loss of taste
can include nasal and sinus
problems (e.g., allergies,
nusitis and polyps), dental
problems, tobacco use, and
neurological issues.

JCC Director Mark Lit lights up theater
with his direction of musical revue.

Unfortunately, loss of
taste can have a sub-
stantial impact on the
quality of life. Impaired
/ taste and smell can
I lead to decreased appetite
and poor nutrition in aging
adults (e.g., the overuse of salt and
sugar), which can exacerbate exist-
ing medical problems.

It's recommended, particularly if
your loss of taste occurred sudden-
ly, that you consult your physician.

A qualified dietitian/nutritionist
can help you select foods with both
enhanced taste and nutrition.
