In that same year in Jerusalem, a child was born: Amos Horev. . This child would grow up to be the one who would help make the Technion founding vision a reality. Maj. Maj. Gen. Amos Horev presented a history of the Haifa-based univer- sity at the American Teclmion Society (ATS) Detroit Chapter board installa- tion on Nov. 7 in West Bloomfield. - At age 17, Horev joined the Pahnach, the elite force of the Jewish resistance movement, the Haganah. During the 1948 War of Independence, he discov- ered the Burma Road to Jerusalem, which gave Israel an alternative approach to the capital after the forces had failed to take Latrun. His military career, which adopted an increasingly technological capacity with every year, was vital in securing the State of Israel. As Technion president in 1973, shortly before the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War, Horev realized and understood that this war had created a new agenda of needs for securing the future. Technion took on a higher calling. "We succeeded in leading and direct- ing developments, laying the founda- tions for a new attitude to high science and technology in the era of the Yom Kippur War and cleared the way for the high-tech boom which was to follow," Horev said. Horev went on to become the chair- man of the Israel Technion Society, general manager of the Bank Leumi Investment Company and board chair- man of RAFAEL. Also at the Nov. 7 installation, the ATS Detroit Chapter board installed Jerome J. Kanter as president and Scott Leemaster as chairman along with following directors: Jonathan Aaron, Kenneth Bassey, Ronald Bassey, Arline Bittker, Richard Blumenstein,. Robert Brody, Rhea Brody, Bernard Cantor, Judith Cantor, Connie Colman, James Colman, Suzan Curhan, Lauren Daitch, Cathy Deutchman, James Deutchman, Eric Dobrusin, Lisa Jacknow Ellias, Gen. LI Answering Israel's Cr itics The Charge Four times in recent months, the United Nations Human Rights Council has strongly condemned Israeli actions. The Answer Even outgoing U.N. Secretary- General Kofi Annan has reacted to the impression that the Human Rights Council is one-sided and obsessed with Israel. Wondering aloud whether the Council has a • sense of fair play, he was quoted this month as saying that the Council should broaden its focus beyond the Palestinian-Israeli issue and to the clear human rights violations taking place in Darfur, Myanmar and North Korea. — Allan Gale, Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Detroit
