vff-,
nativity scene could be displayed
— it was a sense of fairness, either
both or neither:' Beras said. On
Monday, the council said that dur-
ing-the holiday period a private
group can display a "reasonable"
symbol of the season on the city
hall lawn.
The only objection came from
council member Joan Seymour,
who was concerned about the
parameters of such a ruling and
about establishing a set policy.
Councilman Sid Lantz and his
daughter Philicia Brin of Southfield
raised $750 and gave it to P'TACH,
a Jewish organization that helps
learning-disabled children, to pur-
chase the menorah. Lantz said a
Lubavitch group in Oak Park will
light the menorah each night of
Chanukah, then store it until next
year.
"Now both the nativity scene and
the menorah will be there, and any
other religious organization that
wishes to can put their signal out:'
Lantz said. "It worked out fine."
Rabbi Yechiel Morris of Young
Israel of Southfield attended
Tuesday's council meeting and was
pleased with the‘outcome regarding
the holiday display.
"I think they came to the correct
conclusion — either allow all or
none he said, though he admits
he would have been satisfied if the
council had scrapped both meno-
rah and creche and waited until it
had a solid policy.
"The council thinks Southfield is
a city of diversity and it celebrates
that diversity',' Rabbi Morris. "It's-
beautiful that a city is happy to
cherish the diverse makeup of its
residents and wants to showcase
its religions. The council members
wanted to express solidarity with
the various faiths of this commu-
nity. I think everyone was happy at
the end of the day."
In a similar situation in Berkley,
a nativity scene displayed for 20
years by the city was given to the
Berkley Clergy Association for
storage and to loan to churches
that wanted to display it after the
American Civil Liberties Union
challenged the city-owned creche
on city property.
