computers were removed from the
synagogue on [the same] Saturday
evening. The theft occurred while the
building was open."As with the other
synagogue thefts, he said, "There was
no forced entry"
Forced entry did take place when
two computers were taken from an
open library inside the Friendship
Circle's Daniel B. Sobel Friendship
House, said Rabbi Levi Shemtov.
The computers were used by
Friendship House members and had
no data stored on them.

Earlier Thefts

Adat Shalom also reported a com-
puter was taken on Shabbat after-
noon, Nov. 11, when the building
was open. Rabbi Chaim Bergstein
told police a CPU was taken from his
office at Bais Chabad of Farmington
Hills some time in early- to mid-
November.
On Nov. 27, staff at the Shul report-
ed to police that a laptop and pocket
PC were missing on Oct. 30, and that
two computer CPUs, two keyboards,
a monitor and a digital camera were
taken on Nov. 2. Both incidents are
thought to have occurred while eve-
ning classes were taking place.
An envelope of cash was taken
from one synagogue and a couple of
tzedakah boxes from another. Lt. Carl
Fuhs of the West Bloomfield Police
Department said, "These were the
only times anything other than corn-
puter towers were taken." In most of
the synagogues, electronic and corn-
puter equipment was in plain view.
Lt. Fuhs said no arrests have been
made, but added, "We are continu-
ing to investigate leads." Police have
increased patrols in areas around the
targeted synagogues.
He said, "Identity theft is the natu-
ral thing you think of when someone
steals almost only computers," but he
is not aware that any of the comput-
ers stored Social Security numbers
or credit card information. Several,
however, had names, phone num-
bers, addresses and e-mail addresses
of members. There have been no
reports of those individuals receiving
suspicious contacts.
A Farmington Hills police spokes-
person said,"The motive might be
directory information. Or it might be
just a crime of opportunity, some-
one who saw open doors and came
through them."
