Central processing units (CPUs) con- taining the entire stored memory of the computers were stolen from Bais Chabad of Farmington Hills and Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills and Keter Torah Synagogue, Ohel Moed Shomrey Emunah and the Shul-Chabad Lubavitch, all in West Bloomfield. Friendship House, located behind the Shul, also had a theft. All the synagogue thefts appear to have taken place when the buildings were open for programming or services. Carl Fuhs of the West Bloomfield Police Department said in the wake of a rash of thefts from local synagogues this month. Rabbi Michael Cohen said his synagogue, Keter Torah, which is on the busy corner of Orchard Lake and Walnut Lake roads, is frequently visited by strangers, some homeless, some lost. Lt. Fuhs suggested being on guard around any- one not recognized. He cautioned about "tag team" thieves. "One person may create a diversion, like ask- ing for directions, while another commits the crime," Betsy Keilman he said. West Bloomfield and Farmington Hills police are working together on these cases. West Bloomfield police contacted their crime preven- tion unit, which alerted all other synagogues in the township as well as churches, although none had reported being targeted.
