The American Jewish Committee
Metropolitan Detroit Chapter will host
a breakfast briefing, featuring Ilka
Schroeder, a former member of the
European Parliament (1999-2005),
at 7:45 am, Tuesday, Dec. 12, at the
Max M. Fisher Federation Building in
Bloomfield Township.
The presentation will focus on the
demographic and political reality of
Europe and Europe's anti-Semitism
and anti-Americanism. The program
is free and open to the community,
but reservations are required.
The AJC's ACCESS Young
Leadership group will hear Schroeder
7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 11, at the Forte
Restaurant in Birmingham. There is
an $18 charge for that program, and

The Jewish Community Council and
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit will join together Monday, Dec.
25, to present Mitzvah Day.
Families with children, teens, young
adults and seniors will participate in
various activities including visiting
nursing homes, preparing and serv-
ing holiday meals, delivering toys and
gifts to families in need and helping
out at a humane society.
Volunteers will meet for breakfast
and orientation at 9 a.m. at the Max
M. Fisher Federation Building, 6735
Telegraph in Bloomfield Township.
Optional carpools have been arranged
to facilitate transportation to various
sites.
Mitzvah Day's corporate partner is
the Ford Motor Company Fund. The
event chairs are Micki Grossman and
Carol Freedman.
Volunteers are asked to sign up at
Federation's Web site: www.thisisfed-
eration.org/mitzvanday or via a card
that many in the community will
receive by mail. No volunteer applica-
tions can be taken by phone.
The reservation deadline is Friday,
Dec. 8. Volunteers will receive both
confirmation and check-in time in the
mail. Volunteer reservations are filled
on a first come, first served basis.

Program For Moms
On Tuesday, Dec. 5, Huron Valley-Sinai
Hospital will partner with the Jewish
Community Center to present "Super
Heroes ... Super Moms."
The 10 a.m.-4 p.m. program is for
women who find that being a mom is
becoming increasingly difficult. Topics
will include medication safety, proper
nutrition for families, physical fitness,
dealing with teenagers and being part
of the sandwich generation. Women
are invited to the whole day or any
part they are able to attend. A box
lunch will be provided by Milk and
Honey restaurant.
The program will be held at the JCC
in West Bloomfield. Pre-register for

Educator Honored
Amy Appelman, director of Family
Education at Temple Israel, will be
honored by
the National
Association
of Temple
Educators and
awarded the title
of Reform Jewish
_ Educator on
Dec. 25 during
ceremonies at
the association's
Appelman
52nd annual
conference in Kansas City, Mo.
Appelman has been involved in
Jewish educati
on since 1993. She received her
masters in Jewish education from
Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute
of Religion's Rhea Hirsch School of
Education in May 2000.
Prior to coming to Temple Israel, she
was the Judaic studies coordinator at
Temple Israel of Hollywood Day School
in Los Angeles. She has been the direc-
tor of Family Education at Temple Israel
in West Bloomfield since August 2002.
Coming To America
Rabbi Sherwin Wine will present
a series of three forums about the
Jewish migration to America, in honor
of the 100th anniversary of his father's
arrival in the U.S. All three forums will
be held at 8 p.m. at the Birmingham
Temple in Farmington Hills.
Topics include: Dec. 4 — the
assault: "The Russian Campaign
Against the Jews"; Dec. 11 — the
voyage: "The Incredible Journey
from Suffering to Freedom"; Dec. 18
— "Arriving in America: The Greatest
Success Story in Jewish History"
The cost is $8 for non-members of
the Temple. Registration not required.
