Stem Cell Advocacy Dr. Gregory Grabowski, left, and Danny Heumann of Ann Arbor, seated, presented a motivating program, "Jewish Genetic Diseases and the Promise of Stem Cell Research:' to the Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah on Oct. 26. Dr. Grabowski is the director of genetic research at Cincinnati Children's Hospital; his specialty is Gaucher's disease, the most common Jewish genetic disorder. Heumann is a nationally known activist in support of spinal cord research. He has a spinal cord injury from a car accident. He is a motivational speaker, and also promotes stem cell research and legislation. The goal was to motivate listeners to become involved in Hadassah's advocacy work to overturn Michigan's very restrictive stem cell legistation. The Michael Yendick Pure Heart Award went to Al Mudryk. Marty Melton received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Stephen B. Zorn, B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Region president. Melton is a past president. He has been local athletic chair for 35 years and is responsible for creating the region's softball, basketball and volleyball leagues. He also is is B'nai B'rith International athletic chair. The awards dinner committee included Rick Sherline, Lyle Schaefer, Steve Rotenberg, Sid Roth and Nancy Braun.
