First Round ALL 2 FOR 1 SUITS \OW AT 3 FOR 1 PRICES Juicy "Just when I thought that I was out, they pull me back in." — Michael Corleone in "Godfather Ill" W hen the FOX network announced last week they would air a two-hour O.J. Simpson special based on his upcom- ing book If I Did It on Nov. 27 and 29, it wouldn't be any stretch of the imagi- nation to know that the news media onslaught would kick into overdrive. We all know the sordid story from the "Trial of the Century" that brought us white Ford Broncos, Bruno Magli shoes, Greta Van Susteren, Nancy Grace and Court TV. Simpson was criminally acquitted in 1995, but found liable in 1997 for the 1994 murder of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman. O.J. owed $33.5 million to the families of the victims, but some legal wrangling has made collecting that amount a bit more difficult. The Juice gets to live off of his NFL pension and, by moving to Florida, property laws protect him; and he is living a quite comfortable life. After his acquittal, he said he would continue the search for the real killers, which has led him on a decade-long search through public golf courses of this country. In 1995, CNN and other networks made a big deal that the reaction to the verdict was drawn along racial lines. I wonder how many people who thought he was innocent then are rethinking their position? What is the motivation for the Juice to write a book detailing the crime "if" he would have done it? It's not money — O.J. will have to give up any pro- ceeds from the book, estimated at $3.5 million, to the victims' families. Would an innocent husband and father write something like this about his murdered wife? Does it bother him that his children might read this about their mother? Big Biz - Celebrity court cases have become big business, and the network machines have fine-tuned their coverage. When actor Robert Blake and music producer Phil Spector came along with their murder trials, Greta and Nancy and the rest of them took their places for a limited time only. in front of the courtroom, started yammering and we were all the better informed for it, weren't we? Armed with that knowledge, if Paris Hilton should go to court for crawling drunk into her Bentley and backing over her Chihuahua, we'll be able to form a pretty convincing argument at the water cooler, won't we? Juice will be interviewed in the TV special by Judith Regan, pub- lisher of ReganBooks, a subsidiary of HarperCollins. Regan just happens to be publishing his book, which will be out Nov. 30. YouTube has an excerpt showing Juice breaking down while reading a excerpt about Nicole's knifing, but you can't tell if he's really emotional or if he was using the acting skills he developed in The Naked Gun 21/2: The Smell of Fear. Regan defended the program, telling FOX News that "she wanted Simpson's `confession because she herself was once a victim of abuse." According to a story on the FOX News Web site, she said, "To publish does not mean To endorse;' it means 'to make public.'" "If you doubt that, ask the main- stream publishers who keep Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf in print to this day.... There is historical value in such work ... for anyone who wants to gain insight into the mind of a sociopath." Pretty high-minded stuff, Judith. Just wondering what motivating fac- tor inspired Regan to publish How To Make Love Like a Porn Star by Jenna Jameson in 1994. In the weeks to come, the media barrage will increase on the subject that overtook the country 11 years ago, when daytime television was a cesspool of talk shows. The talking heads of FOX News net- work will offer us days of moralizing and finger wagging at the FOX Channel, in effect providing a place for both sides to feel comfortable, while Rupert Murdoch, who owns FOX, FOX News and HarperCollins (ReganBooks) rakes in the whole pot. Brilliant, but it's down-right socio- pathic. 7 FREEDS OF li'IVOSOR For every $100 you spend in November get $10 in Freed's Bucks to spend in December. ask for details. www.freeds.com AR1 FREED 519-258-6532 1 -877-5-FREEDS MON.
