"Even if your shelves are groaning with
kids' videos, every Jewish home will
appreciate this addition. The walkers
will dance and the pre-walkers will clap
and smile. Even the adults will sing along

J1`,1 GIFT GUIDE

Alfie' Bark Mitzvah
(2007, Little Five Star, $18)

Shari Cohen shares the story of the emotions,
lessons and activities surrounding a bar
mitzvah through the eyes of Alfie, a teen
age dog. Celebrating the milestone of
moving from puppyhood to adulthood,
the hardcover book follows Alfie and
his family through pre-"bark mitzvah"
preparations and to the synagogue
where he chants from the Torah.

Guests include his multi-cultural extended
family, his bubble and his zayde, who talks
of his pride in the mitzvot Alfie has performed.

"Alfie's Bark Mitzvah is about a puppy with a Jewish
soul," said Cohen, who has authored other Jevvish•themed books. "He does rn'itz-
: vans in the community and is surrounded by his friends and family when he talks
about his future goals." In the book's acknowledgment, she writes that the story
was written with humor and light spirit, while embracing tradition and song."

Along with the rhyming text, created for early readers, ages 4 and older, are Nadia
Komorova's engaging illustrations. Each book includes a CD of songs, with titles
like "You Bless My Soul" and "Let's Do a Mitzvah," all written especially for the book
by Cantor Marcelo Gindllin, with song samples available on the book's Web site.

May be ordered through Five Star Publications, (866) 471-0777 or

Kosher By Design - Kids in he Kitchen
(ArtScroll/Shaar Press, 2005, $22,99)

Cookbook author Susie Fishbein's compilation of 80 kid-friendly recipes offers
easy to follow instructions and full-color photographs taken by food photographer
John Uher, Intended for use by children ages 8 and older, each recipe is ranked
according to level or difficulty.

A photo index teaches kids about cooking
tools and the author provides directions on
the practice of keeping a kosher kitchen.

'The recipes in this book are for real
food — no silly gummy worms crawling
out of cookie crumbs," Fishbein said.
"They are foods that kids universally
love as well as some starter ideas for
simple meals. The concept of the book
is to challenge kids and to inspire them to
want to cook more."

ter, 21790 W. 11 Mile Rd., Southfield. (248) 356-6080.
