Brad Schulman with his sister, Alison Schulman, and Stephanie Saal, all of Royal Oak ome of singer Billy Joel's best-known songs came to life on stage in dramatic fashion at the Fisher Theater in Detroit during JARC's 26th annual Fall Fundraiser. About 3,500 people gathered for two separate performances of the Tony Award-winning musi- cal Movin' Out — featuring 24 Billy Joel classics set to exhilarating dance routines by famed modern dance choreographer Twyla Tharp. The event, held Nov. 1-2, raised nearly $1.4 million, a new record, for Farmington Hills- based JARC. The organization pro- vides group homes, recreational therapy and other support services for people with develop- mental disabilities. "JARC is the most profoundly decent organization I've ever seen:' said Rob Nusbaum of Franklin, who chaired the event with his wife, Lori, for the sec- ond year. "What they do is so humanly good — everyone there comes to work for one reason, to change lives." More than 325 young adults also attended a "Big Shots VIP Lounge & Bistro" pre-glow, on Nov. 2 at Grand City Grille, inside the Fisher Building. Some of the food, drinks and desserts at the party were served in shot glasses, a nod to the Billy Joel song "Big Shot." The 21-40 crowd raised more than $125,000 for JARC, and organizers say young adult participation is growing. Close to 90 new young adult donors took part in this year's event. "I think it's a great organiza- tion," said Brian Young of West Bloomfield, one of the pre-glow co-chairs. "It's good for the com- munity to be able to integrate people with disabilities and enable them to be productive Members of society" Associate chairs for the Fall Fundraiser included: Lindsay and Ryan Dembs, Sherri and Jimmy Ketai, and Barbara and Irving Nusbaum, all of Franklin; Nancy and Howard Luckoff, and Marla Tapper and Brian Young, all of West Bloomfield.
