nswer (updated from last
vear): Dear Janet, Fear

and anxiety about eating
and drinking too much over the
holidays ;s common. Often, the
fear of succumbing to the siren call
of tempting food and drink has its
roots in ordinary social anxieties
and memories of past diet failures.

What to do? First, recognize the
self-defeating cycle of: (1) Fear of
loss of control, (2) Corresponding
increased self-doubt, and (3) Self-
medication with food/drink to as-
suage those unpleasant emotions-
{ thereby self-fulfilling your
i own negative prophecy.

Dear
Barb; ce
again, I'm wor-
ried about the
upcoming holi-
day season and
seemingly never-ending oppor-
tunities to over-indulge (food and
drink). Any tips? Thanks, Janet.

Love A Parade! 37

Friends provide marching orders
for Thanksgiving floats.

Next, embrace the belief
that you're in control (you
are) and entitled to sue-
) ceed. Develop a positive
plan to deal with holiday
gatherings/parties. For
example, where appro-
priate, ask that healthier
food/drink be offered, or
bring your own. Snack
strategically. Don't be
afraid to do what it takes to
protect yourself. Enlist your family
and friends in your efforts. Also,
remember that alcohol contains
empty calories and impairs will-
power, so use it sparingly!
