W
ith the philanthropic sup-
port of the Applebaum
Family Foundation, the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit is partnering with the Harold
Grinspoon Foundation to launch the
PJ Library.
Conceived as a giving library, the PJ
Library provides young families with
a treasury of Jewish books and CDs
through monthly mailings. The first
year's subscription is free.
The PJ Library (that's PJ as in paja-
mas) seeks to create sweet dreams and
memories that nurture Jewish learn-
ing experiences right from the start in
the first years of life.
Established in 2005 by the Harold
Grinspoon Foundation of Western
Massachusetts to put more Jewish
books into the hands of young fami-
lies, the PJ Library sends a book or
music CD of high quality each month
to participants who sign up for mail-
ings. Each mailing includes a helpful
guide for parents. Occasionally, a par-
enting book is sent as a bonus.
All books and CDs available in the
program have been selected by early
childhood experts to cover a wide
range of topics appropriate for ages
1-3. Themes include Jewish holidays,
folktales and Jewish family life.
"The concept is simple, yet
profound," said Robert Aronson,
Federation's chief executive officer.
"Story time can be one of the most
powerful and nurturing experiences
in early childhood. Why not turn that
experience into a Jewish experience?
Thanks to the vision and generos-
ity of Marcia Applebaum, Federation
now offers the PJ Library as a creative
means of reaching young families,
touching their daily lives and influenc-
ing their earliest educational choices:"
Mother of 2-year-old Lainey, Lauren
Morton of West Bloomfield received
the first PJ Library book mailed in
July."A Jewish household just isn't a
home without lots of books. We've
been surprised and absolutely delight-
ed with the quality of this program.
Our daughter keeps asking when the
next book is coming:'
The first book sent to partici-
pating families was the Caldecott
Medal Winner Joseph Had a Little
Overcoat, by Simms Taback.
"These are not the books that I
would necessarily go out buy. These
books are special, the kind you get as a
gift and treasure said Elisa Harwin of
West Bloomfield.
With 200 children on the list to
receive the free PJ Library mailings,
there's capacity in the program for
100 additional participants. After its
first introductory year, Federation's PJ
Library books and CDs for children
ages 12 to 36 months old will be avail-
able in monthly mailings at the nomi-
nal cost of $18 per child, per year.
To sign up, contact Lisa Soble
Siegmann, (248) 205-2534, or e-mail
siegmann@jfmd.org .
