SAMUEL POPKIN, of West Bloomfield, died Nov. 7, 2006. An award winning architect, he made his specialty hospital design. As a fellow of American Institute of Architects, he was a past president of Detroit chapter. He was a retired vice presi- dent of Albert Kahn Associates, was on the Michigan Fire Safety Board, was an arbitrator for American Arbitration Association, a volunteer for Leader Dogs for the Blind and was a world traveler and photogra- pher. Mr. Popkin is survived by his wife o 61 years, Rosalind Popkin of West Bloomfield; daughter and son- in-law, Barbara and Ming Louie of Northville; son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Debbie Popkin of Grosse Pointe; nephew and niece, Philip and Patricia Atkins; grandnephew, Lee Atkins. He was a retired mortgage broker. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Dinah Scherock; daughter and son-in- law, Janice and James Clement of Rochester Hills; grandchildren and their spouses, Stephen Scherock, James and Stacey Fleenor, Julie Clement, Jason and Erika Clement; great-grandchildren, Abigail and Anna Mills Fleenor. She was the wife of the late Rudolph Scherock. BETTY JEAN SOBOL, 76, of Southfield, died Nov. 4, 2006. He was a graduate of Eastern High School, Wayne University, University of Michigan Medical School. He served his internship at Grace Hospital in Detroit. Dr. Stein was a member of Phi Lamda Kappa medical fraternity and was president as a medical student and as a graduate student as well. He was also a member of the Maimonides Medical Society. During World War II, Dr. Stein served from 1941-45 and was dis- charged with the rank of major. After his discharge, he practiced medicine in Warren. He was also on staff at Grace Hospital, Holy Cross Hospital and Saratoga Community Hospital. During his career, he served as pres- ident of the medical staff at Saratoga Hospital for two terms, was instru- mental in inaugurating the Continuing Medical Education Program at Saratoga and the publication of the hospital's newsletters. In addition, he served on the hospital's board of trust- ees from 1982-1996. Among his professional asso- ciations were the American Medical Association, the Wayne County Medical Society, Michigan Medical Society, American Academy of Family Practice and the Michigan Academy of Family Practice.
