ho is a Jewish Superhero?
More than 100 chil-

aunts, uncles and grandparents from
Congregation Shir Tikvah descended
upon the Jewish Community Center in

answer to this question.
As part of its Sam and Jean Frankel
Family Education program, Rabbi
Aaron Starr of the Troy synagogue
partnered
with Lizzy

ence with Shir Tikvah music specialist
Gail Greenberg.
Each student received a copy of
The Hero Book, thanks to a generous
donation from Rita Haddow in memo-
ry of her husband, John M. Haddow.
"I never want to forget this!" said
Wyatt Strebel, 7, of Southfield. The
event kicked off with music from Rabbi
Arnie Sleutelberg, dressed in a Batman
costume, and Rabbi Starr, dressed as
Robin. From there, the families divided
up by grade and began their unique
experience. "It's incredible watching
parents guide their children in Jewish
learning and Jewish fun',' said Rabbi
Starr. "If being a Jewish hero means
connecting to God, the Jewish people
and one's synagogue family; doing
mitzvot (sacred obligations) and kind
things for others, we can all be Jewish
heroes!"
Doppelt said,"It's exciting to watch
the kids and their parents interact
and form a bond while learning about
Judaism. I think that the commitment
to Jewish education that these families
exhibited makes them all heroes
The event concluded just as it began,
with music.
"Superheroes fight for peace and
justice; Rabbi Sleutelberg reminded
the Shir Tikvah families. "We, too, must
always fight for peace and justice' Then
he led the group in Od Yavo Shalom
(May peace yet come over us all).
Zap! Pow! Bam! is running
through Dec. 14 at Shalom Street. ❑
