Members of Echad B'nai B'rith Youth Organization (BBYO) in Ann
Arbor recently joined with other Ann Arbor area young people in a

"Make a Difference Day" mitzvah program.
Danny Siegel, founder of the Ziv Tzedakah Fund that has support-
ed local "mitzvah heroes" since 1981, participated with the teens in

their community service. The Jewish Educators Council of Ann Arbor
planned the event and the Jewish Federation of Washtenaw County
provided funding.

Shown are Brittany Karson, the Michigan Region social action
chair for B'nai B'rith Girls (BBG), 17, West Bloomfield; Julianna
Scheiman, president, Echad BBYO, 17, Ann Arbor; and Will Scheiman,
14, a prospective BBYO member, also from Ann Arbor, who made
fleece hats for children with cancer.

A

nswer: Dear Sally, No, by
all means, it does not mean
that they should just give
up on their goal of losing weight.

Here are some strategies and ac-
tion steps that may prove helpful
to anyone who has real difficulty
losing weight:
• Do healthy things to•increase
your metabolism, e.g., engage
in regular physical activity and
weight training that will,
4- respectively, raise your
metabolism and increase
energy-burning lean muscle
fi t
mass; keep your blood
sugar in normal range;
• Refrain from a diet of
\
) processed and fast foods
that are high in saturat-
ed fats or sodium; avoid
/ trans fats;
/ • Focus on nutrient-dense
foods as opposed to calo-
rie-dense foods; include
foods with omega-3 fats (e.g.,
cold-water fish and almonds) and
eat more vegetable-based pro-
teins like soy, nuts and legumes;
• Commit to a lifestyle change, not
just a temporary diet change; set
up boundaries with families and
friends—enlist them in the fight.
You can do this.

people who are weight loss resis-
tant should just give up? Sally.
