Celia Bobrowsky

I

n sports, ifs not unusual for a
winning team to lose key players
or coaches. But the Detroit Tigers
lost their director of community rela-
tions before the baseball playoffs even
started.
Celia Bobrowsky of West Bloomfield,
who has been with the team since
1993, has been hired for the same
position by Major League Baseball
(MLB). She will move to NewYork City
at the end of the month and be closer
to her Connecticut roots.
"I'm really happy where I am:'
said Bobrowsky last week at her
Comerica Park office after the Tigers
concluded the World Series. "But
somebody called me last winter to say
the position was open, and I saw it
as an opportunity to have a national
impact!'
In her new position, Bobrowsky will
work for an MLB vice president and
be the community relations liaison
between the baseball commissioner's
office and all the Major League teams.
"Every year',' she said, "Major League
Baseball comes to [the individual
teams] with a binder full of programs!'

This year, their were 12 that clubs were
strongly encouraged to participate
in and seven "that they wanted us to
consider."
Some of the 12 included Jackie
Robinson Day; the Breast Canter
Strike Out Challenge, which donated
funds to breast cancer research for
every strikeout on Mother's Day; the
Prostate Cancer Foundation Home
Run Challenge on Father's Day; Youth
Awareness of Sun Damage; Roberto
Clemente Day; the Commissioner's
Initiative for Kids, which donates
tickets to community groups; and
Reviving Baseball in the Innercity
(RBI) which combined youth baseball
with education initiatives.
In addition to MLB's programs, the
individual clubs have "60-80 projects
of our own each summer." Bobrowsky
said they include hospital visits by the
players and their wives and charity
and communal programs.
"It's not a 9-to-5 job:' Bobrowsky
said. She often put in 100-hour weeks
during the baseball season. "It can be
pretty consuming, but in a good way"
The baseball teams' community
relations directors are a close-knit
group. They share a conference call on
a monthly basis and have joint meet-
ings twice a year to discuss their pro-
grams and best practices. "We all help
each other:' Bobrowsky said. "We all
have long hours, we all care and we are
all in this for our communities."
And she will miss the Detroit
community. Bobrowsky served on
the executive board of the Michigan
Jewish Sports Foundation and said the
Detroit Jewish community "has been
like a family to me. There are people
here who I will be in contact with for
the rest of my life!'
While her parents in Connecticut
are thrilled that she will be less than
an hour away in New York, "I already
have my trip back to Michigan
planned for next year when the Tigers
host the New York Mets.
"I see what passion people here
have to help others',' she said, "and I
will always be a Tiger in my heart."
