West Germany, Austria, Sweden and
Denmark, among others. Often influ-
enced by contemporary art move-
ments, the posters' artists and design-
ers often subjected the filmmakers'
vision to fresh and even idiosyncratic
interpretations.
Unlike more modern-day film post-
ers that glorify celebrity and employ
a more bombastic approach, these
artists addressed "an implicit or
essential aspect of the film, preparing
the viewer for a complex and subjec-
tive relationship with what they were
about to see in the theater."
So that viewers can become familiar

with the movies these posters repre-
sent, the AGW is collaborating with
the Detroit Film Theatre and other art
institutions, including the WIFF, for a
series of screenings and discussions.
An opening reception for the exhibit
will be held 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10,
featuring a curator-led tour. Gallery
hours are 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Wednesdays,
11 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays,
11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
Admission to the AGW is $3 adults,
children under 12 free. For more
information, call (519) 977-0013 or go

Spotlight On Shoshannah
First, there was Marlee Matlin,

a Jewish actress who proved
that a deaf person could have a
major career in films and TV. Now
there's Shoshannah Stern, who
has been deaf since birth and is
the first deaf actress to be in two
TV shows at the
same time.
Stern, 26,
had a support-
ing role in the
Showtime series
Weeds, while
holding down
a co-starring
Shoshannah
role as Bonnie
Stern
Richmond in the
new CBS series Jericho.
Jericho airs Wednesdays at 8
p.m. Weeds just ended its second
season and may or may not be
back for a third, but Jericho has
good ratings, and CBS has just
ordered a full season of episodes.
Like Matlin, Stern comes
from a religious family. Unlike
Matlin, whose parents are hear-
ing, Stern's family has been deaf
for four generations. Both of
Shoshannah's parents are the chil-
dren of German Jewish Holocaust
survivors, and the actress has
commented many times about
how close she feels to her family's
Jewish heritage.

"Barry's Jewish; he also wears
a lot of Western hats. So I wrote
'The Ballad
of the Kosher
Cowboy.' I
recorded it
and played it
— and Barry
cried. The song
didn't make the

Sonnenfeld
but it made it
onto the DVD

Stranger Than Fiction, opening
Friday, Nov.10, is a quirky film
comedy about a guy (Will Ferrell)
who hears a voice in his head
(Emma Thompson) telling him
what is going to happen to him
next. When the voice says she
is going to "kill him off," Ferrell
consults a literary expert — Dustin
Hoffman — who tells Ferrell to
"take control of his own story." He
also consults with a friend, played
by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Eventually,
Ferrell finds out that the voice is
that of a reclusive, real novelist
who is unaware that she is con-
trolling his life — and he must get
to her to save it.
