That's why we must remember the horrors of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, and the foundation it laid for what would be the darkest time in Jewish history, the Shoah. Many laws and regulations aimed at social ostracism came with the National Socialist German Workers' party seizure of power in 1933, but German Jews somehow held on to their economic standing despite the spread of the National Socialist movement, the euphenism for Nazism. The assassination of a German diplomat in Paris by a Jew, however, gave the Nazi fuhrer, Adolf Hitler, a sudden chance to legitimize a pogrom (above) against German and Austrian Jews in the form of a state attack on Jewish homes, businesses and synagogues. The reign of terror began the night of Nov. 9, 1938, and went into the next morning. When it stopped, 7,500 businesses were destroyed, scores of synagogues and homes were burned, and dozens of Jews were mur- dered. Countless women were raped. German concentration camps also began to take on a larger role; 26,000 Jews were quickly confined, but most soon were released. Hitler's secret police and the Hitler Youth wreaked most of the havoc. But in keeping with Hitler's dream of world indoctrination, his official pronounCement "emphasized the spontaneous and broad participation of the masses:' according to the Encyclopedia of the Third Reich by Louis Leo Snyder. Are there other people like me? Thanks, Sally (Sally is a pseud- onym for the many different people who have asked me this question). A nswer: Dear Sally, All people were not created equal when it comes to the ability to lose weight. Indeed, there's an actual term—"weight- loss resistance"—that has been used to describe people who have chronic difficulty losing weight. -4- Unfortunately, there's no 0 one silver bullet that clearly -..\ explains why some people can lose weight easily and . others cannot. Current re- search seems to indicate that weight-loss resis- tance may be attribut- able to different factors: / • Metabolism—which t // itself is not just a sum of / chemical reactions going on in the body, but also is a synergy of age, height, weight, fat, muscle, activity-lev- els, absorption and assimilation; • Hormonal activity—e.g., the levels/efficacy of hormones like ghrelin, insulin, leptin, glucagon and cortisol; • Genetic makeup—A recent Tufts. U. study identified a gene variant that may break the calorie-in- take/body-weight connection. - Next time—some strategies and action steps that may help.
