QUESTIONS

Who's thinking what - and why?

If a November snowstorm is headed toward Michigan,
you can bet RICH LUTERMAN has his eye on it. The
chief meteorologist at FOX-2 News (WJBK-TV) spends
his days constantly checking the radar and other high-
tech forecasting tools as he puts together the station's
weather reports for the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. news.
"We get just about every kind of weather here in
Michigan, except hurricanes," explains Luterman, "so it
makes forecasting a great challenge in and around the
Great Lakes."
After studying meteorology at Penn State University,
the Pittsburgh native served 4 1/2 years of active duty
in the U.S. Air Force as a weather officer: In 1991, he
helped prepare around-the-clock forecasts for Ameri-
can aircraft in the Persian Gulf War. Eventually, Luter-
man's career brought him to Farmington Hills, where
he now lives with his wife, Deanne, and their 6-year-old
twin daughters, Julia and Natalie.
Think being a TV weather guy is easy? When people
poke fun at his job, Luterman goes with the flow. "It's in
our best interest to be accurate - but Mother Nature
and the atmosphere are not 100-percent predictable.

WHAT BOOK, CD, MOVIE OR OTHER MEDIA ARE
YOU LONGING TO SHARE WITH OTHERS?
There are certain movies and books that
I can watch and read over and over again, like
the movies Chariots of Fire and The Right Sttyf I
forever root for the underdog - those who are
expected to fail and those who find some inner
strength to succeed. One book you can always find
under my bed is Americans on Everest by James
Ramsey Ullman. It's a wonderful non-fiction book
about struggle and triumph on the world's highest
mountain.

tion with the Yom Kippur War, especially from a
political-historical view. I would find it most inter-
esting to talk to Golda Meir and understand why
events unfolded as they did during such a crucial
time in modern Israeli history.

IF YOU COULD HAVE BRUNCH WITH
ONE BIBLICAL OR HISTORICAL JEWISH
FIGURE, WHO WOULD IT BE?
It would have to be Golda Meir. During our last
trip to Israel to visit my brother, who lives outside
of Jerusalem, my wife and I went to Kibbutz Ein
Gev, where I have relatives. During the trip, we
saw where some of the desperate battles of the
Golan were fought. Since then, I've had a fascina-

WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED
TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I think people would be surprised to know I
go camping in the woods with my wife and daugh-
ters. We have a pop-up camper, and several times
a summer we head out on long weekend getaways
- from the Upper Peninsula to the Amish Country
of Indiana, from Lake Michigan to Niagara Falls.
We enjoy our "roughing it" time together. ❑

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE JEWISH FOOD?
To this day, my mom makes the best tsimmes
and chicken soup you'll find anywhere. She
also makes outstanding rugelach and hamantashen.
Her mandelbread is right up there as well. I like it
all - from falafel to gefilte fish and everything in
between!
