ns\ker: Dear Gail, When
the body's immune system
detects what it thinks is
an unfriendly invading substance
(allergen), it produces antibodies
(immunoglobulins) and sends them
off to fight the invader(s).

_Lk

Unfortunately, in some people
(those with allergies), their im-
mune system causes the body to
attack harmless substances. The
body's response to these
+ harmless invaders can range

from runny noses to hives to
more serious reactions.

ues-
tion:
Dear
Barb', y infant
grandson may
be allergic to
milk (he gets
hives). What's
the difference between a milk al-
lergy and lactose intolerance? Gail.

A milk allergy is the im-
mune system's response
to one or more of the
proteins found in cow's
milk. Detecting, manag-
ing and eliminating the
offending food/substance
is key. In particular
circumstances (con-
sult a nutritionist first), rice
or soy milk may be substituted.
Some good news: 80% of infants
outgrow their milk allergies by the
age of six.

Lactose intolerance, on the other
hand, involves the bodies inability
to properly digest a dairy sugar
called lactose due to a deficiency
in the body's production of the
enzyme lactase, and may require
different therapies. I hope this
helps answer your question.
