ohann Leprich, an admit-
ted World War II concen-
tration camp guard cap-
tured in 2003, was released from
federal custody on Oct 16.
Leprich, 81, stripped of citizen-
ship in 1987 by the Department
of State's Office of Special
Investigations, was found hiding in
a secret com-
partment in
his Clinton
Township
home in
2003, and
ordered
deported in
2004.
The OSI
has
been
U.S. Investigator
negotiating
Eli Rosenbaum
with officials
in Romania,
Hungary and Germany to accept
him, but Leprich's attorney peti-
tioned the U.S. District Court in
Grand Rapids for Leprich's release,
citing a U.S. Supreme Court deci-
sion that requires the government
free an immigrant who hasn't been
deported within six months of a
removal decision.
Leprich, who immigrated to the
United States in 1952, and became
a citizen in 1958, was released on
an electronic tether to his family,
and will report every week to the
U.S. Immigration and Customs
Enforcement headquarters in
Detroit.
"There have been a number
of cases over the years in which
foreign governments have not
agreed to accept Nazi criminals
against whom OSI has won orders
of removal," said Eli Rosenbaum,
OSI director. "However, Leprich is
the first such person to be released
from incarceration on that basis.
"The delay in removing Leprich
from the United States is disap-
pointing, but efforts to find a coun-
try to receive him are continuing:'
he said.
