Tapper's seeks
clean coats to
help take chill
out of winter.
F
or 15 years, Tapper's
Diamonds & Fine Jewelry in
West Bloomfield has hosted a
coat drive to make winter a bit warm-
er for people who are less fortunate.
This year's drive ends on Nov. 14. The
goal is 1,000 coats.
Jewelers Howard and Steven Tapper
are seeking coats that can be distrib-
uted locally where needed.
"I could give you a dozen reasons
how important this drive is to each
recipient of a warm winter coat;'
Steven said. "Of course, with the recent
bitter cold and dampness, I was able
to open my closet door and choose
from a number of warm coats.
"What is it like to not be able to stay
warm inside your house, let alone not
have a clean, warm coat to put on?
Even though every year I think I have
emptied my closet, this morning I
found and brought in three coats."
New hats and gloves also will be
accepted.
Clean coats that aren't torn
may be donated at Tapper's in the
Orchard Mall, northeast of Orchard
Lake Road and Maple. Other col-
lection spots are: in Southfield at
the Detroit Jewish News, Yeshivat
Akiva and Congregation Shaarey
Zedek; in Farmington Hills at Hillel
Day School of Metropolitan Detroit;
in West Bloomfield at the Frankel
Jewish Academy of Metropolitan
Detroit, the Jewish Community Center
Health Club and Shaarey Zedek B'nai
Israel Center; and at the Bloomfield
Township offices of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
Coats will be distributed through
Orchards' Children's Services in
Southfield and two Pontiac agencies:
Grace Center of Hope and Baldwin
Church Center.
"If someone wants to donate cash
or a check;' Steven Tapper said, "we
will find a company to partner with
on the purchase of new coats or hats
and gloves at a special price."
