Doreen Lichtman wrote a novel based on her family history.

D
oreen Lichtman's mother
had lasting problems as
the victim of a hit-and-run
accident, and the family suffered along
with her. Over the years, as the result
of police comments, Betty Abrams and
those close to her believed that the
driver was a wealthy man who could
pay to have his identity concealed.
Lichtman, forever concerned with
the consequences of drunk driving,
decided to turn her mother's story into
a novel. She named the fictionalized
victim Rebecca Abrom and turned the
imagined driver into a character.
The book, Survival from Malice -
(iUniverse; $17.98), is being intro-
duced with works by other local
authors at this year's Jewish Book Fair.
"Thinking about this novel dur-
ing the mourning of my mother's
death kept me in touch with her,"
says Lichtman, an Orchard Lake
resident who will be signing copies
noon-1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
"My mother was 21 and married
with a 1-year-old daughter when she
was hit in 1935. She lived the rest of
her life in pain!"
Lichtman, who took journalism
classes while preparing for a career in
social work, had written articles for -
community newspapers before she
tackled Survival from Malice. She
chose her title to emphasize the frame
of mind shown by drunk drivers
and hopes that her recollections will
inspire people to prevent those under
the influence from getting behind the
wheel.
"Working on this book gave me a
deeper understanding of what my
mother went through:' Lichtman says.
"I want others to know the hardships
this kind of accident can cause!" .
