endi Douville was at a
conference of fitness-
center professionals
when a speaker asked - an unsettling
question. "How many of you," he
wanted to know, "actually work out
yourselves?"
More than 60 men and women
were in the room, and fewer than 10
hands went up. "Mine not included,"
Douville admits. She had a dread-
ful feeling in the pit of her stomach
— a feeling not unlike having just
consumed 100 donuts. The kind with
extra sprinkles and frosting.
That was April 2004 and Douville,
director of member services and
aquatics at the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield, has been
working out ever since.
Douville grew up in Oak Park
and West Bloomfield, a tomboy who
loved sports. She spent many after-
noons enjoying outdoor activities at
the JCC and at Camp Tamarack in
Ortonville, where she met her future
husband, Andre, now executive direc-
tor of Temple Shir Shalom in West
Bloomfield.
But she pretty much avoided the
health clubs and fitness routines
until that 2004 wake-up call. Today,

_

she oversees a crowd (the
JCC Fitness Center has more
than 10,000 members),
which means she knows all
the excuses for not working
out and she's not buying
them.
Yes, Wendi Douville wants
you exercising; and no
matter your shape, weight,
health status, age or fears,
she has the answer.
The first step is to con-
sider a person's health
concerns, she says. Have you
had heart problems? . Knee
trouble? A hip replacement?
Asthma? All of these can influence
the design of a workout. Seniors and
pregnant women should speak first
with physicians before starting an
exercise program.
The next question: What is your
goal?
"Be realistic," she says. You've had
three children and need to lose 50
pounds and you're thinking, "I want
to look like a Sports Illustrated
model," or you haven't walked further
than five feet in the past year and
you're saying, "I'm going to run in a
5K marathon!" Try again. A better
approach: "I want to feel better."
Third: dump your scale. In fact,
Douville says, "Don't step on the
scale. Ever." A workout, if you stick
with it (key words) will change your
shape by transforming fat to muscle.
Muscle weighs more than fat, but
unlike those rolls it looks good, so
you'll see a difference in your body
and in the way your clothes fit.
Next is that sensitive issue of food.
"A lot of people think that working
out.means they have a license to eat,"
she says. You can continue to down
ice cream and fries and, if you exer-
cise, "you're not going to gain any-
thing — but you're not going to lose
any weight, either."
Another key to a successful work-
out: Know your equipment. Any good
