Is there more on the subject? Thanks, Stephen. A nswer (Part 2 of 2): Dear Stephen, you may recall that last time I mentioned that lack of sleep may be con- nected to the diminished produc- tion of hormones that suppress hunger. Within the past few days, a significant British study has linked lack of sleep among children to childhood obesity. , ---( r One of the hormones be- lieved to play an important role in hunger suppression is leptin, the production of which (along with insu- lin), is believed dimin- \ ished by lack of sleep. ) Serum leptin levels are i also believed to be mark- / ers of individual energy levels. I think it's fair to I say you can expect further significant research in this interesting and evolving area. Other hormones that play a role in weight loss/gain are g-lucagon and cortisol. Glucagon allows the body to breakdown fat when insulin levels are not high. Elevated levels of cortisol, the so-called "stress hormone," are linked to increased abdominal fat and correspond- ing, serious health issues. I hope, at least in part, this helps answer your timely, pertinent question. — Barbara Beznos, Registered Dietitian Key JN Phone Numbers: Direct 'Your Ouestions For Barb Switchboard: (248) 354-6060 And Counseling Inquiries To: General News: (248) 351-5144 Business News: (248) 351-5148 Arts News: (248) 351-5142 Circulation: (248) 351-5174 Retail Ads: (248) 351-5151 Classified Ads: (248) 351-5100 .
