Ypsilanti E astern Michigan University Hillel hosted three Israeli university students who spoke about their experiences living in Israel at an Oct. 11 forum co-spon- sored by the EMU Political Science Department and Pi Sigma Alpha. The delegation was chosen to demonstrate the diversity in Israeli society by Israel at Heart, a nonprofit organization that sponsors student delegations, Israeli basketball teams and Israeli musicians who visit college campuses across North America, Europe, South America and Australia. Daniel Desta described her family's escape from Ethiopia on foot in Operation Moses and her experi- ence in the Israeli Defense Forces at a checkpoint for Palestinians to enter Israel. Jeremy Hulsh grew up in Chicago; he spoke about his experi- ence living in Israel, making aliyah in 2002, and serving in the IDF on the front lines of the recent action against Hezbollah on the northern border. Daniel Greenberg, born in Great Britain, made aliyah as a baby. He spoke about the variety of Israeli opin- ions about the recent conflict as well as the broader situation in the Middle East. While speaking to an EMU "War and Peace in the Nuclear Age" class and other political science students, the delegation fielded questions cov- ering such topics as the situation in Lebanon and the damage inflicted on both sides, the perception of the United States by the average Israeli, media coverage of Israel, the effects of extremism and the possibility for future peace. Hillel hosted a kosher luncheon fol- lowing the presentation for Pi Sigma Alpha honors students and faculty, then partnered with the Hebrew Day School of Ann Arbor, where the del- egation visited the school's Hebrew immersion classes. EMU Hillel Director Clara Silver believes the Israel at Heart students brought positive messages about Israel and Israelis to campus. Answering Israel's Critics The Charge: At this month's general conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency, a mostly Arab-Muslim bloc of states (angered by what they perceived as Western inaction dur- ing Israel's conflict with Hezbollah) pushed for a resolution to brand Israel's suspected nuclear weapons a "threat" to regional peace and stability. The Answer: While Israel does not admit to hav- ing nuclear weapons, its nuclear program reportedly began in the 1950s after two wars launched by the Arabs to annihilate it. Israel is the refuge of the Jewish people, the only Jewish nation and protection against another Jewish Holocaust. If Israel has nuclear weapons, they are meant not as a threat, but as a deter- rent to Israel's destruction. — Allan Gale, Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Detroit 1175750 A boutique featuring home accessories with clean lines and a sophisticated design style.
