Incumbent Weiser
Seeks Re-Election

Eileen Weiser of Ann Arbor is run-
ning as an incumbent for a seat on
the State Board of Education. She has
been a board member for eight years.
"I have spent the past eight years
working to build bi-partisan con-
sensus on issues like Michigan's new
school curriculum
standards, teacher
preparation and
ensuring access to
technology in all
Michigan schools:' she
said. "There is much
work to be done and
I aim to finish what I Eileen Weiser
have started."
She considers
these to be the state's most press-
ing educational challenges: helping
schools increase student achieve-
ment; implementing the tough new
high school curriculum standards;
ensuring that Michigan teachers are
ready for today's students and pre-
pared to teach more rigorous content
requirements; increasing the number
of teachers in hard-to-staff geo-
graphic areas or for specific subjects,
including math, science and special
education; and increasing the dollars
flowing into classrooms to help cre-
ate better student outcomes.
"As a member of the National
Assessment Governing Board, the
organization responsible for The
Nation's Report Card, I've been able
to search the country for ways that
children learn best," she said. "I spent
three rewarding years in Slovakia
while my husband served as its U.S.
ambassador. Slovak educators shared
their educational challenges with
me, and I studied why their math,
science and literacy scores are higher
than those in the U.S:'
Weiser holds piano performance
degrees from Michigan State
University and the University of
Michigan.
From 1988 to 2001, she worked for
the McKinley Foundation, a nonprof-
it organization that acts as a catalyst
for innovative community projects.
Concurrently, she was a member of
the Michigan Council for Arts and
Cultural Affairs, the state's cultural
grantmaker.
She is married to Ronald Weiser
and they have a 6-year-old son. I
