Strochlitz of New London,
0
Conn., made monumental con-
tributions to Holocaust remem-
brance. He died Oct. 16, 2006, at age 89.
Born in Poland, Mr. Strochlitz was
deported to Birkenau in August 1943. His
parents, sisters and wife were killed upon
arrival. After 15 months, he was sent on
death marches and was finally liberated
from Bergen-Belsen in April 1945.
He married Rose, also a Holocaust sur-
vivor, and immigrated to New York in 1951.
In 1957, he bought a Ford dealership.
Mr. Strochlitz became close to Holocaust
survivor and writer Elie Wiesel, who was
also in Birkenau. In 1978, President Carter
named Wiesel chairman of the President's
Commission on the Holocaust. Mr.
Strochlitz became Wiesel's chief lieuten-
ant. Wiesel relied on his loyalty and keen
pragmatism He, in turn, translated Wiesel's
poetic vision into concrete action.
The one area where Mr. Strochlitz
assumed sole responsibility was the
civic commemoration of the Holocaust.
He established the format: a national
commemoration on Yom HaShoah to
be observed in the Capitol Rotunda in
Washington — and commemorations in
the capitals of each state. In its first year, all
50 governors signed proclamations. Ii
