Welcome To MOCAD
The region's newest museum,
Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit
(MOCAD), opens its doors next week
with a major exhibition of installation
art. The museum's inaugural exhibit,
titled "Meditations in an Emergency"
is organized by renowned curator
Klaus Kertess, who has curated the
Whitney Biennial and is currently
organizing a retrospective on Chuck
Close for the Reina Sofia in Madrid.
Kertess was inspired by the
MOCAD building on Woodward at
Canfield, which he calls a "roman-.
tic ruin:' to feature artists — Mark
Bradford, Christopher Fachini, Barry
McGee, Roxy Paine, Paul Pfeiffer, Jon
in with the Finch family and began
a gay relationship with the Finches'
30-year-old adopted son.
Jewish actress Jill Clayburqh
plays Dr. Finch's wife, while
Gwyneth Paltrow and Evan Rachel
Wood play the Finches' two very
quirky daughters.
Wood, 19, has an unusual Jewish
background – her mother con-
verted to Judaism before she was
born and her father isn't Jewish.
She referred to herself as Jewish
in one interview, but other than
that, not much is known about her
Jewish upbringing.
Paltrow, whose late father was
Jewish, recently disclosed that
her new son was named Moses
because it was her father's Hebrew
name.
A Guide to Recognizing Your
Saints, currently playing in the-
aters, is about a gay man named
Dito, from a tough New York neigh-
borhood, who leaves town when he
Pylypchuk, Tabaimo, Kara Walker and
Nari Ward — "who deal with issues
germinated by the fragmented state of
our more closely connected world."
"A museum dedicated to contem-
porary art has been a missing piece in
the fabric of Detroit's art community,"
says Marsha Miro, president of the
MOCAD board of directors and an
arts writer who has been active with
Temple Beth El. After nearly a decade,
"this opening and first exhibition
brings our vision into reality"
The gala benefit opening, with food,
drinks and performances by artist
Fachini, is Thursday, Oct. 26. There
will be a Patron's Preview ($125)
beginning at 6 p.m. The Museum
Preview ($45) begins at 8 p.m. The
party continues, with dancing to DJs
from Ghostly International, from 9:30
p.m. - 1 a.m. ($10).
MOCAD opens to the public
Saturday, Oct. 28. Scheduled events
include a lecture by Kertess at 4 p.m.
and a question-and-answer session
with him at 7 p.m.; there will be per-
formances by Fachini throughout the
day and evening. Sunday, Oct. 29, is
Family Day, with special art activities
and events.
The museum is located at 4454
Woodward Ave. Admission is free.
Hours are noon-6 p.m. Wednesdays
and Sundays, noon-8 p.m. Thursdays,
Fridays and Saturdays. (248) 833-1336

His non-Jewish father became a

LaBeouf started working as a
