Incumbent Driker
Seeks WSU Seat

.

E

ugene Driker of Detroit is
running as an incumbent
Democratic candidate for
the Wayne State University Board
of Governors. He
was appointed to
fill an unexpired
term four years ago
by then-Gov. John
Engler. Driker now
seeks a full eight-
year term.
Driker has been
associated with
Eugene Driker
Detroit-based WSU
for more than 50 years. He received
his undergraduate degree in math-
ematics there in 1959 and graduated
at the top of his law school class in
1961. Currently, he is a senior partner
in the law firm of Barris, Scott, Denn
& Driker PLLC, specializing in com-
plex business disputes.
He has chaired the panel that
selected nominees for three bank-
ruptcy court vacancies and, at the
request of U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and
Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, he
chaired panels that evaluated nomi-
nees to the U.S. Court of Appeals and
District Court.
Active in numerous professional
and communal activities, Driker
serves as president of JVS, on the
board of the Barbara Ann Karmanos
Cancer Institute and on the Detroit
Police Commission and the Detroit
Building Authority. He's been hon-
ored with WSU's Distinguished
Alumnus Award and, most recently,
received the Wade H. McCree Award
for the advancement of social justice
from the Federal Bar Association.
At Wayne State, he led the Law
School's capital campaign that
brought in $19.4 million, more than
twice the original goal. He also serves
on the WSU Foundation board.
As a WSU board member, he has
supported increasing enrollment,
improving the quality of instruc-
tion and enhancing and marketing
research activities. He says he feels
WSU can and should be a major cat-
alyst for economic growth in south-
eastern Michigan and has supported
policies to help make it happen.
His wife, Elaine, also is a WSU
graduate. She is founder and head
of the Detroit Orientation Institute
at the university. They have two
married children and five grand-
children. D
